History

🏛️ Brokenshire College Toril
a legacy of faith, service & excellence

Brokenshire College Toril is the fruit of the labors, commitment and dedication of people whose noble intention is to carry on the ministry of the United Church of Christ through quality education. The year 2003 marked the foundation year of the institution when on May 12, 2003, the Boards of Trustees of Brokenshire College and Toril UCCP Learning Center Inc. (TULCI) agreed to continue the educational venture in the Toril community through Brokenshire College Toril. The agreement was made to ensure that the educational venture would remain within and a part of the educational ministry of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP).

📜 The Founding Years (2003–2015)

The Board of Trustees of Brokenshire College tasked Rev. Ermelinda B. Villegas to manage the Toril Campus while the registration of a new school under the Brokenshire College system was being processed. Rev. Villegas sought reforms and furthered the development of the Lubogan campus. She was later appointed as the first Chief Executive Officer of Brokenshire College Toril Davao City, Inc. Her service officially started in the SY 2003-2004. On July 31, 2003, Brokenshire College Toril was officially registered under the Securities and Exchange Commission as a non-stock and non-profit organization.

In the school year 2004-2005, the Toril campus was officially renamed as "Brokenshire College Toril, Davao City Inc." Brokenshire College Toril became an extension campus of the BS Nursing program, Information Technology, and Bachelor in Elementary Education of Brokenshire College (Main Campus) from June 2004 until 2012.

In partnership with Broadlink @ IRC, BCT performed the legwork and marketing for the Computer Literacy Program of the school. This course covered fifteen Sunday sessions on Basic Computer Operations and Applications. The first batch produced 99 students who received their certificates of completion on November 30, 2008.

Although a young member of the education industry, BCT underwent a process of upgrading its quality in terms of education and services in 2013. The school was visited and inspected by the members of the Association of Christian Schools, Colleges, and Universities—Accrediting Agency Inc. (ACSCU-AAI) in February 2013 for initial accreditation. BCT received commendation for being one of the youngest educational institutions to pursue accreditation.

On March 21, 2013, the groundbreaking of the chapel took place with the faculty, staff, students, and Board of Trustees as witnesses, responding to the need for a sacred space in this Christian-imbued institution.

By SY 2014-2015, BCT was under the management of a new Directress, Rev. Hidita C. Villas. In February 2015, BCT was revisited and inspected by ACSCU-AAI, and on April 24, 2015, the school was awarded LEVEL I Accreditation. In the same year, the school continued its progress under the leadership of School Principal Mr. Enrico Abo, offering programs in Pre-School, Elementary, High School, Computer Literacy, and Caregiving.

📈 The Paniamogan Era

In SY 2016-2017, Dr. Cherrie N. Paniamogan assumed the top post as School Director.
In sync with the national implementation of the Senior High School program, the school established its SHS department offering academic tracks (ABM, HUMSS, STEM) and technical vocational livelihood tracks. The school has since become one of the educational institutions in Toril with the highest number of SHS students.

In SY 2017-2018, another significant layer was added to the school's culture of excellence as ACSCU-ACI, after revisitation and reassessment, upgraded its accreditation status to LEVEL II—a rare feat for an institution below 20 years old. It was also in this school year when the Research Office was re-established.

🤖 2018: Pioneering Robotics Education

Beginning in 2018, Brokenshire College Toril became one of the first initiators among educational institutions in Davao City to incorporate a robotics program into its curriculum. BCT focused on physical robots—computer-programmed machines capable of carrying out specific series of tasks automatically. First Eduspec, Inc. provided BCT with the VEX IQ robotics curriculum and materials, making building and programming physical robots through Robotics Software more attainable.

On November 24, 2019, BCT participated in the INTERNATIONAL ROBOTHON 2019, STEAM International Challenge in Guangzhou, China, with the theme "2050 Food Effect," where participants were tasked to build and program an agricultural robot. (ACSCU-ACI) upgraded its accreditation status from LEVEL II to LEVEL III-5 Years for its preschool, elementary, and high school programs. Confirmed in December 2022, this recognition further cemented BCT's standing as a basic education institution providing well-rounded quality education, powered by instruction, research, and community extension, exceeding the minimum standards set by the Department of Education (DepEd). BCT will retain this extraordinary status until December 2027, making it one of only two basic education institutions in Davao with Level III ACSCU-ACI Accreditation status.

On February 7, 2026, the BCT Robo Aces achieved a remarkable haul of eleven major awards, including the coveted Overall Championship, during the 11th Philippine Robothon held in Iloilo City. Competing against top-performing schools from various regions nationwide, the Robo Aces—consisting of elementary, junior high school, and senior high school students—showcased exceptional skill, innovation, and teamwork across multiple robotics categories.
